GEA: Gas Energy Australia statement on 2035 emissions reduction target
18 September 2025

The Federal Government's 2035 emissions target positions Australia as a pragmatic leader in global decarbonisation. Sector emission reduction plans released in parallel demonstrate an increasingly diversified approach behind the target, including support for low-carbon liquid fuels.
Greater policy support is critical to enabling low-carbon liquid fuel markets. This is especially true for lower-volume fuels such as BioLPG. Produced alongside Renewable Diesel or SAF, BioLPG can provide renewable energy access to regional Australian energy customers currently reliant on LPG.
"BioLPG could provide a genuine decarbonisation option beyond Australia's cities," said Gas Energy Australia Chief Executive Officer, Jordan McCollum, "supporting regional energy decarbonisation for consumers who live and work beyond the grid."
Today, thousands of businesses and over 1.8 million households use LPG, the majority of which are located in regional Australia. Where other forms of energy supply become unreliable or unavailable, LPG provides regional energy consumers with the energy security and energy access they need.
"But there is little policy support for retail consumers to transition to low-carbon liquid fuels like BioLPG," said Mr McCollum, "I hope today's targets will help drive policy to provide retail consumers the right to choose low-carbon liquid fuels where other options don't suit their needs."
Beyond retail energy consumers, regional industries can reduce emissions through LPG too.
"The Energy Sector Plan highlighted coal-to-gas switching, but many coal consumers aren't located near gas infrastructure – this is where LPG and BioLPG could play a role."
LPG is already being used to replace coal as seen in this case study. Here, an industrial coal consumer reduced its emissions by around one third by transitioning from Coal to LPG. With policy to support an Australian BioLPG market, they could achieve net zero emissions by transitioning to BioLPG.
GEA commits to working with the Federal Government to develop a policy landscape conducive to a BioLPG market in Australia.
"It's about time the Australian energy transition starts to provide regional Australia with genuine decarbonisation options. Support for Renewable Diesel is a start – support for BioLPG must follow."
