Federal government unlocks BioLPG and Co-processed LPG in national emissions accounting
30 June 2026
Gas Energy Australia (GEA) welcomes the implementation by Minister Bowen of amendments to Australia's National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) scheme that formally establish BioLPG and Co-processed LPG as recognised low-carbon liquid fuels in Australia's national emissions accounting framework – a milestone GEA has long advocated for.
"This is a landmark moment for the LPG sector and for the Australian energy transition," said Gas Energy Australia Chief Executive Officer, Jordan McCollum. "For the first time, facilities and industries that wish to consume BioLPG or co-processed LPG will be able to have that choice reflected in their NGER reporting. That is a foundation on which a genuine market for renewable LPG can be built."
The Amendments, which come into effect on 1 July 2026, also enable the use of ISCC PLUS Sustainability Declarations alongside Product Guarantee of Origin certificates – key to enabling Australia's first co-processed LPG, to be produced by Viva Energy and distributed by Origin Energy within the coming year.
"Certification is the link between consuming a renewable fuel and having that choice mean something in emissions accounting," said Mr McCollum. "The framework established by these amendments will help bring Australia's first Co-processed LPG to market."
GEA acknowledges the significant work of Minister for Climate Change and Energy, the Hon. Chris Bowen MP, and the Quarterly and Industrial Emissions Team within DCCEEW, who worked closely with industry and stakeholders to deliver these amendments.
"The sector is ready, and the Government has signalled that renewable liquid gases are part of their net zero plan," said Mr McCollum. "GEA will continue working with government to identify the settings required to make BioLPG and other renewable liquid gases a reality for all Australian LPG customers."

About Renewable Liquid Gases (rLG):
BioLPG is a biofuel derived from biomass which can be produced in biorefineries alongside Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Renewable Diesel, while Co-processed LPG is a similar product produced in existing refineries. Both are drop-in renewable forms of LPG which are 100% compatible with existing LPG appliances, making the renewable transition simpler for existing LPG consumers.
