GEA commends Cook Government's $21 million package for Albany LPG transition
20 August 2026
Gas Energy Australia (GEA) commends Minister Sanderson and the Cook Government for today's $21 million package to support Albany households and businesses through the transition away from the region's piped gas network, helping customers maintain secure energy supply as they move to bottled LPG or electric alternatives.
The package, which builds on an already committed $10.8 million, will help more than 6,000 homes and small businesses cover the cost of converting to bottled LPG or purchasing electric appliances. This represents an equitable approach to securing continuity of supply for customers who choose
bottled LPG, while respecting the choice of those who wish to transition to electric appliances. "This is a strong outcome for Albany and shows what's possible when government listens to industry and community," said GEA Chief Executive Officer, Jordan McCollum. "We've been clear since January
that bottled LPG is the simplest, cheapest option for affected households, and every customer deserves the right to choose how they transition."
GEA also welcomes the government's commitment to a detailed Trade Capacity Assessment. This will engage local tradespeople to ensure the region has enough qualified gas fitters to deliver the volume of conversions required over the three-year transition. "Getting enough licensed gas fitters into Albany at the right time will make or break this transition," Mr. McCollum said. "The free energy audits for large gas users will also be critical, helping commercial
customers with more complex needs find the right pathway." "No Albany household or business should be left without reliable energy, and no one should be out of pocket for a network decommissioning decision they didn't make," Mr. McCollum said. "This package gets that balance right."
GEA looks forward to continuing to work with the Cook Government and Energy Policy WA as further details on timelines and access to funding are released.
