About LPG
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a clean-burning, versatile fuel made up primarily of propane, produced as a by-product of natural gas processing and oil refining. Stored as a liquid under moderate pressure, LPG is easily transported and stored in cylinders, tanks or bulk vessels, then vaporised on demand for use.
In Australia, LPG has powered homes, businesses and industry for over 65 years, valued for its portability, reliability and the fact that it works wherever it's needed, independent of the electricity or gas mains networks. This makes it especially important in regional and remote communities, where reticulated gas is unavailable or impractical.
LPG's applications span the economy. It heats and cooks in millions of Australian homes, fuels vehicles and forklifts as autogas, powers commercial kitchens and hot water systems, and delivers the high, controllable heat needed for industrial processes from food production to manufacturing. It
is also a valued recreational fuel, powering caravans, barbecues and camping equipment across the country.
Part of LPG's appeal lies in how cheaply it can be stored. A standard 45kg residential LPG cylinder holds around 629 kWh of energy, costing around $150 to purchase outright or $60 per annum to rent. That works out to roughly $0.24 per kWh of storage capacity. Compared to home battery systems at $700 to $1,100 per kWh in Australia today, LPS energy storage is 1,000 to 10,000 times cheaper than BESS per unit of energy stored.
