Autogas
Autogas has fuelled Australian vehicles for decades, and renewable liquid gas has the potential to carry that same performance into a lower-emission future. As a widely available, cost-effective alternative to petrol and diesel, autogas remains one of the simplest ways for motorists and fleets worldwide to reduce fuel costs without compromising on range or convenience.
Autogas is LPG produced to an automotive-grade standard, supplied to service stations through a dedicated refuelling network across the country. This infrastructure has been built up over decades, giving autogas vehicles genuine reach across metropolitan, regional and remote areas alike.
Historically, fleet operators have valued autogas for its lower cost per kilometre compared to petrol, particularly for high-mileage vehicles such as taxis, delivery vans and government fleets. Combined with lower exhaust emissions than petrol, autogas has made a meaningful contribution to cleaner air in Australian cities for decades.
Autogas use has declined over the past decade, driven predominantly by the loss of production-line manufactured and warranty-backed converted autogas vehicles from the market since the early 2010s. As a result, Australia's autogas refuelling network has contracted, though it remains readily available across much of the country.
Despite this, government has taken no action to reverse the decline, and hundreds of kilotonnes of avoidable emissions have returned to the transport sector as autogas vehicles have been replaced by higher-emission petrol alternatives.
As transport looks to reduce emissions, renewable liquid gas has the potential to give autogas a new lease of life, offering existing and new users a genuine pathway to lower the emissions associated with their travel, using the same vehicles, refuelling infrastructure and technology already in place today.
